Review Session| Dopest Kicks 2009

leave a comment »

Let’s get it going! Our year-end review of the 5 Dopest Sneakers of 2009. Now, just to add some qualifiers — we’re talking about SNEAKERS, not designer shoes, not footwear in general — straight up Kicks. Sneakerheads…if you have any sneakers you think we missed, drop us a comment!

1. Space Jams

Grade: A

“Arguably the most classic, yet innovative sneaker to date. They bridged the gap and provided the new generation with an even greater appreciation for the Jordan brand.” – The Couthless Suit

2. Air Yeezy

Grade: A-

“The Yeezys created a strong following…that’s probably only rivaled by the Jordan Brand — difference is…he did it with ONE shoe. Amazing.” –  the FlyyNerd aka Will Walker, Sneakerhead

3. Supra TK Society

Grade: B+

“If the Skytops were the dopest shoe in 2008, these would have to be their cool, tall 1st cousin. TK’s crushed the game with that extended hi-top — had kat’s looking like fly astronauts.” – Italo Brown, Editor

4. Nike SB Blue Lobster

Grade: B+

“They were the BEST PACKAGED sneakers I’ve seen in a while. They went all out with the marketing, and followed all the way through to the ice-chest box they came in. It’s rare to see that much attention to detail — plus, the sneaker is bonkers.” – Big Vic, Sneakerhead

5. Adidas x Jeremy Scott Wings

Grade: B

“Innovative. Artistic. And definitely veered away from the ‘strap’ trend, which was very difficult to do this year. Jeremy Scott has a unique eye and he made sneakerheads respect it.” – Italo Brown, Editor

[4]u|Tø Know: PUMP 20.09

leave a comment »

The Reebok PUMP, one of the most iconic sneakers in history, is celebrating its 20th Anniversary. But instead of launching a commemorative sneaker (I would’ve settled for a Dominique Wilkins or Dee Brown edition) or having the traditional sneaker-shaped birthday cake cut in a million slices, the creative minds at Reebok decided to celebrate in a different way. Reebok opened the invitation to collaborate with sneaker boutiques and retailers WORLDWIDE (i.e. Colette, BODEGA, HUF, UNDFTD, Patta, Sneakersnstuff from Stockholm) on custom Reebok PUMP sneakers. Across the globe, some of the most innovative concepts have been applied to the Reebok PUMP, including new colorways, deconstructed materials, patterns, and even added elements such as key chains, shirts, you name it! Each boutique/retailer is launching their limited edition PUMP 20 collection on….you guessed it, November 20th, 2009! Keep your eyes open, because a retailer near you JUST MIGHT be dropping the illest sneaker in this entire project!

Here’s a look at some of the collabs:

RecessionPrøøf 220: Payless

with one comment

What if I told you that you could pull off designer footwear….for less than $50?

Payless has paired with designers like Christian Siriano (of Project Runway fame), Alice + Olivia (Russian designers), and STPL (of Staple Design) to produce some recession-friendly footwear options for both women and men. I understand that people have an affinity for overpriced goods….but sometimes it’s about getting more bang for your buck, being sexy while also being smart with your expenses. Don’t let the name fool you! Payless has put a lot of effort into acquiring industry-proven brands and making affordable products that are just as fashionable as “runway footwear”. Check out these examples….none of which exceeds $49.99:

KW x LV photoshoot

Take one of the most anticipated footwear collaborations (Kanye West x Louis Vuitton), cross it with an ill photographer (Daniela Muller-Brunke), and what do you get?? A well-done visual presentation of iconic footwear, quarterbacked by Highsnobiety.

Enjoy the rest of the experience here.

Air Yeezy: Meet the [Under]studies

with one comment

Less than Yeezys

This post is dedicated to all those who DIDN’T get a pair of the ever-so-coveted Air Yeezys. With two colorways already released in limited quantities, eBay-ers have treated these sneakers with the same price inelasticity as diamonds — making it pretty difficult to obtain a pair without selling a kidney on the black market.

Today we’re gonna show you a few kicks that (1) ARE available (or will be available shortly), (2) ARE dope enough to draw the attention of others, and (3) WON’T leave your account overdrafted.

EXHIBIT AThe Ocean Runner by Greedy Genius

Likeness: Extended HiTop; Grey Colorway; like the LV sneakers by Kanye…but Hitop.

Where it Differs: Think Sperry x Supra x NIKE….not Kanye x NIKE x Warren Buffet. These are gonna be a heavy hitter upon release, mainly since this is the best looking Greedy Genius shoe to drop. Expect heads to turn, and wallets to say “Thank You”.

EXHIBIT BRT1 by NIKE (White/Grey/Turquoise colorway) aka “The UnYeezys”.

Likeness: Extended HiTop; Bright contrasting interior; Safari Texture; Protruding tongue.

Where it Differs: Well….add a strap & an air bubble my friends, and PRESTO-Alacazam!! You have an Air Yeezy (but for about $135 LESS).

EXHIBIT C – Ex-O- Fit Hi SG Strap by Reebok

Likeness: Mid-Strap; Vibrant (attention-grabbing) colorways; mixture of materials.

Where it Differs: This sneaker is ALOT more OSTENTATIOUS than the Air Yeezys. It uses tone-on-tone, so more than likely…your sneakers will stand out from the rest of your ENTIRE outfit. Oh…did we mention you can get these for under $100?

The smARTORIALIST: Kingdom Comme [pt.2]

junyawatanabejunyawatanabe1junyawatanabe1

We’re revisiting Kindom Comme: the key choices that Comme des Garcons has made to become a luxe-hybrid brand. In the last installment [Part 1], I mentioned the Junya Watanabe Effect. For a little background info, Junya became an apprentice at Comme des Garcons in 1984, working as a patternmaker. Now, through several power moves, Junya became one of the most influential designers at the label — in fact, he’s responsible for much of the Homme line’s character.  Eventually he was given the appropriate title of “Rei’s Protege”.

Junya has a keen interest in using “technologically-advanced textiles and fabrics”, not to mention his use of cotton. [HOW CROSS-OVER is THAT!!]  Think back to some of Junya’s most noted contributions — they come in the form of collaborations. And whom does he collaborate with…Iconic Sneaker Brands. Converse, New Balance, Nike, and Vans all have been blessed by the Rei Protege’ (under eYe), just as runways in Paris and Milan have. And the whole time, Junya’s connection to Comme only strengthened, doing more exploration of patterns and male silhouettes with his label eYe and Comme des Garcons at the helm. “How did Comme benefit,” you ask. Well, they were provided with the PERFECT Petri dish to test nontraditional Comme des Garcons concepts…..like working with common treasures.

Stay tuned for Part 3 of Kingdom Comme, where we’ll discuss the positioning tactics Comme has used to broaden it’s luxe-hybrid market.
