Post-Valentine’s Day| The Clean-Up

leave a comment »

Valentine’s Day, Valentine’s Day — how we love thee. February 14th marks one of the most romantic, and hopefully, electric days of the year for Urban Grads & Graduettes. I’m sure yours were filled with falling rose petals, candlelit dinners, chocolate decadence, and of course…the special occasion unmentionables. But now that the the roses are wilting, candles have melted away, chocolate devoured, and the encapsulated passion has experienced its “decrescendo”… what are you going to do with THAT lingerie?!

For the good graduettes who said, “Take It with Me” — one point for you (it’s a recession, I understand — plus, lingerie is NOT cheap). For the naughty graduettes who said, “Leave It with Him” — two points for you (trust me…every guy wants to be left a pair of panties or a bra at least once in life — a token of your appreciation). Either way…the person who fails to WASH these underthings is a complete filthmonger.

Delicates are a very…well…delicate subject; caring for them can easily be over or under-estimated. Many cute bra/panties sets have been sacrificed, teddy and corsets completely ruined because of this laundry tug-of-war. Simple solution: LINGERIE BAGS.

It’s actually quite easy to protect your lingerie. Just place garments inside the lingerie bags, and wash on the DELICATE CYCLE with COLD WATER. After completion, DO NOT TUMBLE DRY — lay them out flat atop a bath towel, and let the capillary action do its thing.

Just because you washed it doesn’t mean that the memory will ever fade — you and he will know EXACTLY what made those unmentionables worth mentioning.

Class|in|Session: F.I.T. Parents Day Fashion Show

leave a comment »

I got a chance to sit in on the FIT fashion show on Parents Day. The collection consisted of womens casual, evening, wedding, and swim wear from a number of FIT students. We were not supposed to video so I had to sit far away and capture some footage. All I had was my digi cam with me so please don’t judge and excuse the shakiness lol. This was caught on the fly with whatever resources were available.

This Urban Grad tecccchnically needs no introduction (especially if you’ve seen THAT Notorious B.I.G. tee by RockSmith). Put it this way, if we had to sum our boy up in 2 words….they’d be…..YOUNG BASQUIAT. Given his natural artistic abilities, keen eye for color, and insightful selection of subjects, this installment won’t be anything short of magnificent.

If you’ll be in the NYC area in 10 days, MARK YOUR CALENDERS for a night of fashionable debauchery like no other! In an effort to resurrect the shopping spirit in less than enthusiastic economic times, American Vogue along with tourism group NYC & Co., the City of New York and the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) have joined forces to boost the consumer spirit in America’s fashion capital, the Big Friggin’ Apple. Starting on the evening of the first day of NY Fashion Week, your favorite designer’s stores will be open until 11PM featuring extravagant shopping events. So far, over 700 stores in all five boroughs will be participating in events that range from sewing circles and barbecues to shoe capsules and sweepstakes. The city will be lite ablaze in celebratory glory as people are encouraged to take the competition out of fashion and shop (x3) alongside music and various other festivities.

What started off as the Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour’s brainchild, has matured into an event of epic proportions. “Little did I think when the idea of Fashion’s Night Out was first dreamed up this past March during the Paris collections that we would have over 700 and counting retailers, designers, and brands joining us on the night of September 10.” The celebration kicks off at Macy’s Queen Center at 5PM. Wintour, Michael Kors and a “surprise celebrity guest” will sign t-shirts for the first 50 people (Or should I say “customers” to keep within the theme of shopping?).

This special event will bring out a host of celebrities, designers and models who will join in on the festivities. Scheduled to appear are Manolo Blahnik, Thom Browne, Tory Burch, Roberto Cavalli, Francisco Costa, Frédéric Fekkai, Alberta Ferretti, Patricia Field, Carolina Herrera, Tommy Hilfiger, Derek Lam, Nanette Lepore, Trish McEvoy, Isaac Mizrahi, Kate Mulleavy, Josie Natori, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Oscar de la Renta, Narciso Rodriguez, Lela Rose, Rachel Roy, Maria Sharapova, Elie Tahari, Diane von Furstenberg, Alexander Wang, Yeohlee, David Yurman, Lauren Bush, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Cindy Crawford, Lynda Carter, Hugh Jackman, Karolina Kurkova, Liev Schreiber, Stephanie Seymour and Ivanka Trump (just to name a few). Via WWD.

There will be limited edition FNO t-shirts being sold at participating retailers throughout NY. I’ve been thinking about copping one since I saw one at this store in Soho. Forty percent of the proceeds from the sale of these shirts go to the National September 11th Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center. There will also be a clothing drive at various retailers for the NYC AIDS Fund from September 10th to the 12th. Urban Grads and Graduettes, this will be a great start to an amazing Fashion Week.

To view a complete list of the events in NYC go here and then click on the respective designer’s name.

The SmARTORIALIST: The Schuman Shøw

leave a comment »

Graduettes and Grads, the Sultan of Sartorialism Scott Schuman is finally putting all of his photographic work into one bound, street-inspired collection of the same name as his applauded website, THE SARTORIALIST.

The long-awaited book will come in paperback and a special hardcover edition, and will consist of 500 pages of his personally favorite photographs. The paperback will be significantly cheaper than the hardcover. “This was very important to me because as a photographer I wanted a beautiful book to showcase my images – but I didn’t want to do just another expensive coffee table book that would be too expensive for many of my readers.”

To launch the book there will be a “Sartorialust” pop-up shop in Barneys New York. So mark your calenders on August 12th for the US release of Scott Schuman’s masterpiece of the human fashion menagerie. The hardcover “Bespoke Edition” is available now on Amazon.com.

Check out more coverage from the man himself at http://thesartorialist.blogspot.com/2009/01/sartorialist-book.html.

Air Yeezy: Meet the [Under]studies

with one comment

Less than Yeezys

This post is dedicated to all those who DIDN’T get a pair of the ever-so-coveted Air Yeezys. With two colorways already released in limited quantities, eBay-ers have treated these sneakers with the same price inelasticity as diamonds — making it pretty difficult to obtain a pair without selling a kidney on the black market.

Today we’re gonna show you a few kicks that (1) ARE available (or will be available shortly), (2) ARE dope enough to draw the attention of others, and (3) WON’T leave your account overdrafted.

EXHIBIT AThe Ocean Runner by Greedy Genius

Likeness: Extended HiTop; Grey Colorway; like the LV sneakers by Kanye…but Hitop.

Where it Differs: Think Sperry x Supra x NIKE….not Kanye x NIKE x Warren Buffet. These are gonna be a heavy hitter upon release, mainly since this is the best looking Greedy Genius shoe to drop. Expect heads to turn, and wallets to say “Thank You”.

EXHIBIT BRT1 by NIKE (White/Grey/Turquoise colorway) aka “The UnYeezys”.

Likeness: Extended HiTop; Bright contrasting interior; Safari Texture; Protruding tongue.

Where it Differs: Well….add a strap & an air bubble my friends, and PRESTO-Alacazam!! You have an Air Yeezy (but for about $135 LESS).

EXHIBIT C – Ex-O- Fit Hi SG Strap by Reebok

Likeness: Mid-Strap; Vibrant (attention-grabbing) colorways; mixture of materials.

Where it Differs: This sneaker is ALOT more OSTENTATIOUS than the Air Yeezys. It uses tone-on-tone, so more than likely…your sneakers will stand out from the rest of your ENTIRE outfit. Oh…did we mention you can get these for under $100?

The Urban Graduate [trav.el]

with one comment

In every man’s luggage there should be 3 MANDATORY things. First, there should always be a suit or blazer/trousers combination (that’s in case any event pops up). Second, there should always be an EXTRA set of basic undergarments, you know — boxers/boxer briefs, crewneck/A-neck/V-neck t-shirt, and dress hosiery/athletic socks. Finally, there should be (drumroll please….) a DOPP KIT!

A Dopp Kit is to a man what a cosmetics caboodle is to a woman. We’re gonna run down some of the necessary elements of the dopp kit, so get out your pads and pens:

1. The actual Dopp bag

GQ Official Dopp Kit

Go with leather (traditional) or nylon (washable). You want something that’s durable, roomy, and shallow enough to stack inside your luggage.

2. Skin Care Products

Men's Grooming Products by Gentleman's Tonic

Travel appropriate shower gel, shampoo, facial cleansers, shaving cream, aftershave, and lotion.

3. Oral and Bodily Hygiene Products

Esquire's Top Oral Hygiene Picks

Travel appropriate toothpaste, mouthwash, dental floss, and of course — the toothbrush. For the body, deodorant and cologne of choice.

4. Hardware

Straight-Edge Razor by Hollow Ground

Razor (straightedge is ideal, but disposable or electric works too), finger/toe nail clipper, comb/brush, and nosehair trimmer (seriously).

5. X – Factors

Travel Kit by 3Sixteen x Dickson Hairshop

These are the answers to those “in case of….” scenarios. Book of matches, bandaids, aspirin or cold medication, condoms, lint roller, spare contact lenses, earplugs.

An[atom]y of the Hobo Bag

with one comment

Hobo Bags

I admit, I absolutely love to walk the subtle path were fashion meets convenience! And as of late,  The Hobo Bag is MY #1 TRAVEL BUDDY . So as a guest writer, fashionista, and Urban Graduette, I wanted to share the things that I think make THE perferct Hobo bag.

The first thing I think about is the “Slouch Factor”. I need it to be very duffle-like, with slack in the right places — like the ends. You can usually tell this when you put it on your shoulder. If the slack is still there, that’s the one.

See by Chloe' -- Slouch FactorMichael Kors -- Slouch FactorBottega Veneta -- Slouch Factor

The next thing I look for is the “Openness” of the bag. I like to have enough space to fit a pair of shoes inside, along with my iPhone, pocketbook, my makeup….and the list of essentials goes on. Basically, it should be roomy, but not overly spacious.

The final thing, and my personal favorite, is the “Hidden Treat”. I love bags that have neat details — like special key chains, textures, light ornate accents. THIS adds the spice to the bag!

Just my lil take on Hobo Bags. Anatomy 101
